Diwali (Deepavali) is a celebration of good over evil. The word deepavali means, a series of lights. This festival is celebrated in India mainly by Hindus,on the last day of rainy season. The traditional seasonal calender being a lunar calender, that day is a new moon day. The festival is celebrated by lighting fireworks. The mythology tells that a demon by name,"Narakasura" is killed by "Lord Krishna" and his wife "Satyabhama". and all the people celebrated the death the next day by lighting wick lamps and fireworks. Keeping the mythology aside, it being the last day of the rainy season, the smoke from the fireworks, help killing all the insects that grew in the swamps.
On the 4th day of November 2012, The Hindu Samaj temple of Minnesota in Rochester,MN and The Rochester Vidyalaya celebrated the festival at Century High School. The celebrations is marked with the performance of Karnatic and Hindustani Songs, Bhratanatyam, Abhang and various Bollywood songs by the students of Rochester Vidyalaya.
